Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Speech Therapist (ST) works under the supervision of the Rehab Supervisor and the Director of Rehab. He/she is responsible to organize and conduct medically prescribed speech and language pathology services to inpatients, outpatients, and contracted services. Provides for comprehensive speech/language pathology services, upon physician order, to patients exhibiting communication, cognitive and/or swallowing disorders, in order to restore function, prevent disabilities, assist the patient in reaching maximum performance, and help them learn to live within the limits of their capabilities. The ST will provide ongoing updates to patients, their families, and other healthcare team members as to the progression toward therapy goals by following established department/facility processes. He/she is responsible for development of patient centered, individualized therapy programs with focus on delivery of quality, value-based care consistent with Campbell County’s Health’s vision, mission, and values. The ST oversees or participates in program development for the betterment of the patient, department, facility and/or continuum; and attempts to reach or exceed departmental goals for improvement across the healthcare continuum. The ST practices within the framework of the Wyoming State Board of Examiners of Speech Pathology and Audiology, American Speech Language Hearing Association professional standards, and National Patient Safety Goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs patient assessment and documents in patient record that which reflects skilled treatment, time billed and accurate utilization of CPT codes
  • Develops an age-appropriate plan of care which addresses physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs, in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
  • Implements the plan of care, delegates appropriately, and ensures documentation of interventions, completing all daily notes, charges and other paperwork per CCH policy.
  • Sees all patients as scheduled and assists with other patient needs throughout the continuum if needed, demonstrating fiscal responsibility, accountability, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Evaluates progress towards desired outcomes, revises plan of care and intervenes as necessary, completing progress notes timely to provide support for continuation of skilled therapy.
  • Educates patient and families regarding current health status, plan of care, and anticipated outcomes.
  • Provides service excellence to all customers and positive interpersonal relations with all team members.
  • Maintains professional standards related to clinical practice, staffing and continuing education.
  • Works scheduled work hours and participates in weekend coverage to meet patient needs;is flexible during times of high and low census and will provide coverage to other CCH service lines as needed.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment that is conducive to high quality care.
  • Provide supervision to Clinical Fellows and students in a manner that ensures safe and efficient care in accordance with CMS rules, WY Board of Speech Pathology, and ASHA.
  • Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent from an ASHA-accredited program and/or seeking to complete a Clinical Fellowship year (CFY)
  • Licensure
    • Wyoming Licensure
    • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) by the American Speech and Hearing Association
    • Current license holders must be in good standing with the Wyoming State Board of Examiners of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Experience
    • One year experience preferred
  • Certifications required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ability to meet continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR) to maintain professional license.
  • Licensed professionals must strictly adhere to the ethical code of their respective discipline.
  • Must use good judgment in interpreting patient referrals and performing appropriate speech procedures.
  • Able to think quickly, handle various projects simultaneously with attention to accuracy, prioritization, patient request, detail, memory, problem solving, reasoning, ability to memorize routine assignments, computer mnemonics, all with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and manipulate numbers, percentages, and indexes from equipment for procedures.
  • Ability to explain procedures to patients and speak clearly to communicate with patients, families, physicians, and staff regarding patient’s condition, etc.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
  • Analytical and reasoning skills with a high level of mental concentration and memory.
  • Ability to develop positive interactions and solve complex problems in a professional manner with patients, patients’ families, physicians, and staff in order to effectively care for the patients.
  • Computer Knowledge including the ability to enter material into electronic record. Ability to operate fax, computer, and copy machine to perform the duties of the position.
  • The ability to demonstrate knowledge of developmental stages and apply developmental theories/concepts when planning and implementing care for the appropriate age of the patient. Ability to maintain the appropriate level of knowledge and skills.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in the following age groups:
    • Infant (Neonate to Age 1)
    • Pediatric (Age 1-11)
    • Adolescent (12-18)
    • Adult (19-64)
    • Geriatric (Age 65 and older)
