This is a one (1) year 50% Contract position. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs and funding of the department.

DESCRIPTION

Under direct guidance of senior researcher, applies acquired skills and knowledge of applicable research discipline to support field research projects of small to medium size and intermediate scope and complexity field research projects.

Supports research projects that rely on field observations as well as keeps current with the latest technologies and research advances. Performs a variety of field work, data processing and reporting tasks related to coastal field and research processes. Assists in coordinating fieldwork, collecting GPS and LiDAR coastal surveys, deploying, recovering, and maintaining scientific instruments, and maintaining field and laboratory equipment, vehicles and vessels. Processes and quality controls point cloud survey data. The position will be within a dynamic collaborative environment with opportunities to develop independent troubleshooting skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.

  • Experience working with scientific instruments in the surfzone, offshore, and on the beach. Background and knowledge of coastal processes to effectively serve in an outreach capacity if needed, engage with beachgoers, and answer simple questions about field work and surveys being conducted.

  • Demonstrates ability to work in ambiguous conditions. Ability and experience working at the beach, driving trucks and all-terrain-vehicles, and walking and pushing equipment over soft and hard packed sand and through the surfzone.

  • Experience operating 4x4 vehicles on beach sand and cobbles. Ability and experience driving jet skis in and offshore of the surfzone. Knowledge of safety practices for operation of vehicles on the beach and jet skis in coastal waters. Skills to drive safely on public beaches as might be obtained through Emergency Vehicle Operations Courses for Open Waters and/or Lifeguard Academy. Skills in being water safe as might be obtained through Emergency Vehicle Operations Courses for Open Waters, Lifeguard Academy, and/or medical training.

  • Experience with point cloud processing software.

  • Working knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.

  • Working knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the operation of survey equipment, computers, and software for coastal data collection.

  • Proficient research and analytical skills.

  • Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships and partnerships with remote research partners.

  • Demonstrates ability to work with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Self motivated, independent, able to learn quickly, and demonstrate problem solving skills. Possesses the ability to follow through with assigned tasks until completed.

  • Effective communication skills with project team members. Good interpersonal skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels. Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academics, staff, students, and volunteers.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • Will be required to hold valid driver’s license and have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures. Position is subject to a DMV check for driving record and valid driver’s license.

  • Must be willing to work overtime; occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Must be willing to work in the surfzone and at remote field sites for several times per year.

  • Must be able to operate University owned/leased cars, trucks, all-terrain-vehicle, and to push a manual dolly across the beach and through the surfzone. Must be able to swim.

  • Must be able to to pass the ATV Safety Institute Rider Course.

  • Position will involve physical labor for both field work and everyday tasks.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
